An Open Letter to Meryl Streep
I love you, woman. I have probably watched all of your movies, and you are just brilliant. I also agree with every word in that amazing speech.
Yes, disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose. As a journalist, I especially loved your shout out to protect the press. I could not agree more.
However, my dear Linda of the Deer Hunter, you know as well as I do, bullying, violence, oppression of the press did not begin with Trump. You acted like you were just waking up to an ugly reality which was being perpetrated by this one man. You are giving him too much power and credit, and you are missing so many points that I don’t know where to start.
Let’s talk about bullying and violence, at the highest levels of our government. Remember that time we openly harassed then waged a war, based on fabricated “evidence” by the way, on a poor country which we had already weakened into hopelessness with our decade long sanctions? Would you call that enough bullying? How about our incessant meddling in other countries’ elections, helping to topple their elected leaders, bombing them without their permission? Get in line, or else! Would you call that bullying and violence?
Yes, making fun of disabled people is awful, horrid and heartless. Isn’t causing them to be disabled as bad? Do you know the number of disabled adults and children that were created from the bombs we have been dropping on Iraq, Libya, Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, Pakistan? There is no record of that number, but I have the number of the bombs we dropped on them in 2016. Maybe they did not cause any disability. You decide:
While you are checking those numbers, consider reading this information about “violence”:HOW THE U.S. MADE DROPPING RADIOACTIVE BOMBS ROUTINE. How do you think this violence might incite more violence?:
Are you aware that we have the highest incarceration rate in the world? Most of them are black and brown boys and men, most of them non violent drug offenders. Our government imprisoning people for using drugs, and being racist while doing it, as we know blacks and browns are stopped and searched at higher rates than whites. Would you call this bullying?
Let’s talk about disrespect, at the highest levels of our government. Represent US, a watchdog organization that keeps track of government corruption, published a video based on a 20 year long Princeton University research that says our government, our elected representatives, don’t even bother to listen to us when making laws affecting our lives. They couldn’t be bothered, despite being elected by our votes. Would you call this disrespect? I would, of the highest order.
According to direct data from our government, more than 50% of our working class makes less than $30,000 a year, yet you had the audacity to stand there in your $20,000 dress to call yourself and your peers in tuxedos, ‘the most vilified segments of American society right now’. Yes, the 1% which you are a part of, has been bullying our working class for decades, Meryl. And you, with your fake outrage and snobbery, living in your 1% bubble, are absolutely clueless about what is going on in your own country and around the world.
Let’s talk about press freedoms which are guaranteed under our constitution. Do you know what the “Countering Disinformation And Propaganda Act” is? Trump did not sign that. It was a gift handed to Trump by Obama, to better censor the press by promptly establishing a ‘Ministry of Truth’. Do you know how many whistle blowers were prosecuted under the Obama Administration? Do you care? “An investigation by the Committee to Protect Journalists concludes that the president has presided over an unprecedented campaign to control the media.” Read it and weep!
I can go on and write a book about violence, bullying and oppression of the press by our government and politicians, going all the way back to this country’s inception, from what we have done and are still doing to the Natives of this land to our blacks who were brought here on slave ships. Please stand up and use your celebrity power for promotion of peace and freedoms, but do it in a way that includes an in-depth understanding of the root causes of these problems.
I still love you, Meryl. Let’s hope this was a moment of awakening for all of us that what you have mentioned has been going on. The real victims are wishing you to be outraged, not only against one man, but against the entire system that has been perpetrating violence, bullying and oppression of the press, overtly or covertly for years.
Quoting your friend, Princess Leia, “No matter how different we appear, we’re all the same in our struggle against the powers of evil and darkness.” I hope you will dig deeper and understand better, what really is going on and join us with genuine awareness and compassion, not by shallow outrage.
