Is the US Legally Obligated to Accept Refugee Children?

IMMIG-master675-v3

Tens of thousands of Central American children, mainly from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala have been fleeing from increasing violence in their own countries. Women are being raped and murdered in masses, and the rate of children getting raped and murdered has gone up steadily every month since January 2014. It is a crisis in the most tragic sense of the term. All these children are fleeing from almost certain death, leaving their parents behind, reaching the border of the USA with survival as their only goal. Unfortunately, they are treated as criminals by the US Government, and in most…

BREAKING Update On Dan River Coal Ash Disaster: State Admits to Arsenic Levels

coal.ash

A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE to our report yesterday on the Dan River Coal Ash Disaster affecting North Carolina and Virginia: As reported by John Downey of The Charlotte Business Journal late last night, the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Division of Water Resources has admitted that the arsenic levels their agency originally published on Thursday as falling “within state standards” did, in fact, exceed the standards for human health consumption. We have been in touch with Tom Reeder, Director of DENR’s Division of Water Resources, whose office just issued a press release. Within the release, Mr….

Teacher Appreciation Week: Do Something!

Picture of teacher and student

Since 1985, Teacher Appreciation Week has officially taken place during the first full week of May, and National Teacher Day falls on Tuesday. Perhaps your children are engaged in school activities or assemblies which celebrate the impact teachers have on students’ lives. Teachers often work long hours for relatively low pay. Teachers continually give, often at the sake of their own expense and personal time in a cultural and political climate that often overlooks the full value of teachers’ contributions to society. And yet, practically all people can recall that one teacher who truly made a difference in their lives….

Ten Reasons Why You Should not Support the NRA

120905055240-money-bills-story-top

1. The NRA is a terrorist’s best friend.   Technology is making it increasingly possible to manufacture handguns made primarily of plastic and other non-metal materials which cannot be discovered by metal detectors. This gun would be a terrorist’s dream but a nightmare for airport security. In the 1980s Ronald Reagan’s Attorney General proposed a ban on the manufacture of plastic guns, but the NRA opposed this legislation and it was withdrawn.  Over the years, similar attempts to prohibit the manufacture of plastic guns have been killed by the NRA. Of course, no law-abiding person needs a handgun that can evade…

May 1st is International Worker’s Day, Here’s Why it Matters:

workers-unite

In case you’ve missed it, today (5/1) is International Worker’s Day, also known as May Day. In America, the biggest holiday for workers is Labor Day, which falls in September. May Day is  the international worker’s equivalent of labor day. Around the world, protests and demonstrations have shown the extent to which workers are outraged and are showing their ability to flex their collective muscle. In Istanbul, Turkey, demonstrators caused a city-wide shut down. In Greece, striking union workers shut down train and ferry services. In Jakarta, an estimated 150,000 workers marched on the capital, demanding an increase in pay and…

Slippery Slopes, Camels’ Noses and You

megyn-kelly-nra-wayne-lapierre.png

We’ve all heard them, suffered them and thrown them around like so many rhetorical dice landing where they may during arguments heated and hilarious, so without further adieu let’s examine two dog-eared metaphors of argument and their latest outings this past week. Thursday afternoon, Wayne “Slippery Slope” LaPierre appeared somewhat stunned by Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly’s feint toward reporting, when she confronted him with the real possibility that several Sandy Hook students may still be alive today had gun magazine capacities been gently limited over the years. Also in the news, the White House finally revealed its DOA budget…

If you’ve never participated in one of these, they are extremely effective and worthwhile. From the MDA website: “Please Tweet your Senators as frequently as possible between the hours of 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2,…

The Gays Are Coming To Take Your Guns: Rational Inquiry Into Prop 8 And DOMA

Hands Holding up Poster with Equal Sign

“We are not endeavoring to chain the future, but to free the present. We are not forging fetters for our children, but we are breaking those our fathers made for us. We are the advocates of inquiry, of investigation and thought. This, of itself, is an admission that we are not perfectly satisfied with all our conclusions.” – Robert Ingersoll FEAR AND FAIRNESS As fallible human beings, we are typically guided by either fear or fairness. Fairness is an inherently American concept that has animated and defined our country from inception. We care deeply about fundamental fairness. And what is…

Lessons In Steubenville

steubenville schools_2

The events in Steubenville, Ohio, bring different stories to our minds; stories of young boys and girls who see each other with humanity and compassion. Stories of parents, teachers, and other adults who have guided many teenagers to a place where they know rape is wrong and where, when someone is doing something bad, you do not stand by and let it happen. So why were the young men and women in Steubenville unable to act in a way that demonstrates even a modicum of compassion and respect for a fellow human being?  Two boys are convicted of the crime;…

Progressive Press Petition: Demand Majority Leader Harry Reid Step Down

HARRY REID (D-NV): FOR THE GOOD OF OUR COUNTRY AND FOR THE CHILDREN OF NEWTOWN, RESIGN NOW AS MAJORITY LEADER OF THE SENATE. Today, (AP News) “Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid decided that a proposed assault weapons ban won’t be part of a gun control bill the Senate plans to debate next month.” For the first time in a decade, the will of the People in this country is powering an effort to mitigate the terrible gun violence plaguing our nation. Democrats control the Senate and presumably have the votes needed to pass meaningful gun safety legislation. Yet, one man…

The Tree of Liberty and The Roots of All Evil

Money-in-politics-photo-via-Shuttershock

And liberty and justice…for those who can afford it… Corruption. It’s one of the few issues that everyone, on every “side” simply detests. Regardless of the spin put on it or the arguments and justifications for its practice, most will agree there is simply no excuse for it. And while generally bandied like a partisan beach ball, with each side trying desperately to condemn the other for their influences and complicity, while bending over backwards to justify their own, so much is lost in the process. Despite this endless noise and outrage, the roots of corruption, the very mechanics of…

Standardized Testing: More Harm Than Good

Those-who-can-teach-from-teabonics-e1362505354898

Early in 2013, Seattle high school teachers boycotted their annual standardized test. This brave and necessary move has reignited public debate about the place of standardized testing. School reform has gone back and forth for over a century and a half, between the 19th century, Prussian military-industrial model to Dewey’s individualized, “special snowflake” philosophy and back again to factory- and business-preparedness treatment of children. Because neoliberalism is the winning philosophy at the moment, the worth of schools is tied to how well they can churn out identical cogs to plug in to the economic machine. Schools around the country have…

Tax Payers Fund For-Profit Charter Schools as They Fail Miserably

9-30-FloridaVirtualAcademy-620x277_2

Paolo Friere, in “Pedagogy of the Oppressed“, shows us the view of education as liberating and empowering, as a dialogue between teacher and students, and creating community through collaboration and empathy.  K12 Inc., a for-profit, public online school, shows us the view of education where public school districts are ‘liberated’ from their tax dollars for the phenomenal return of under performing students and underpaid, non-certified teachers. The private venture capital model of return on investment and maximizing profits holds empowering students toward greater insights and performance as the least important component of their model. And until recently they have been able to convince…

The First Truly Global Empire: John Perkins’ Interview with Progressive Press

“I thinks it’s fair to say that economic hit-men have produced the world’s first truly global empire…” Such was the response of author and activist John Perkins when defining what an economic hitman is in an interview with the Progressive Press on Tuesday. Perkins, an internationally acclaimed writer and advocate for global sustainability, goes on to point out that in the modern age of economic colonialism (in which empires are established through economic force as opposed to military domination) that the modern empires are not those of governments, but corporations. Under the auspices of supporting and developing infrastructure, Perkins claims the…

Rise Up To Stop Violence Against Women: Join V-Day’s One Billion Rising Events

I thought long and hard before writing this article. I am not a person who easily shares personal stories or struggles. Not that I think my fellow human beings would not care, but sharing my story is like ripping the scab off a wound I would rather ignore than recall. When I first saw this video, tears poured down my cheeks. It is so sad that probably many women would have the same experience watching it, since one out of three (one billion) women on this earth experiences abuse, in some form or another, during her lifetime. It took me…

When The Whistle Blows: Whistleblowers Face Scourge

Top-10-Most-Influential-Whistleblowers-541x420

What do Mark Klein, Frank Serpico, Joseph Wilson, Daniel Ellsberg, Jeffrey Wigand, W. Mark Felt, Julian Assange etc. have in common? They are what we subsume under the term whistleblower. While whistleblowers often become quite famous for the stories they help uncover, seeking fame is not generally their motive for speaking up. But to any general rule there are always exceptions. How do we treat the so-called whistleblowers once they are identified? Are they heroes for speaking up and opening them selves up to public scrutiny and/or praise? No doubt, the public’s opinion about whistleblowers is marked by the motives…

Where is the Justice?

parrish bennette jr

On January 17, 2013 Parrish Bennette, Jr. accepted  a plea deal of 18 years for manslaughter in the death of 14 year old Yashanee Vaughn. Originally charged with murder, Bennette who was 16 at the time of the crime, faced a sentence of 25 years if convicted. In the twists and turns of the case, the location of the victim’s body was not revealed for 4 months; the assumption was that the defendant was not revealing this information. This situation further highlighted the anguish of both families. One family waiting for word on the location of their daughter’s body, pleading…

Perpetual Volunteers: Teachers Should Not Be Expected To Work For Free

I saw a “job announcement” last week for someone to teach after-school classes. It touted the “opportunity” to plan lessons and run classes (and of course it would also include classroom management, material preparations, and parent relations). In all ways, it appeared to be a posting for a part-time teaching job. The kicker? The job was completely volunteer! I’m all for volunteerism, but when the volunteer “opportunity” looks EXACTLY like a highly-skilled day job, it starts to cross into insulting territory. For what other profession is this acceptable? “Looking to give a surgeon the opportunity to perform brain surgery several…

Safe and Legal Abortion is a Woman’s Health Issue

roe-v-wade-1-e1279633405530

In light of the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion; the case is again being made by “pro-life” groups and individuals that the issue is about saving the lives of the innocent, unborn. Their most egregious taunt is calling pro-choice individuals “pro-abortion.” No one is pro-abortion. We are pro-women’s health. Health as defined by the World Health Organization:  ”Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Access to safe and legal abortion and education, and access to contraception is a worldwide women’s health issue. If you want…

What is the NRA’s Real Goal?

Did you ever wonder if there is a connection between the following two facts? The board of directors of the National Rifle Association consists mainly of gun dealers, gun manufacturers, and others who profit from the multi-billion dollar gun industry. The NRA insists that virtually every crime problem in the country has one solution, more guns, which as it turns out, means more gun sales and even more profits for the gun industry. When President Obama did absolutely nothing about guns and gun violence, the NRA said he was the most anti-gun president in history and screamed “He’s coming to…
