FBI Arrests 18-year-old US Citizen Headed for Syria to Join Jabhat al Nusra
According to the report in The New Zealand Herald, a U.S. citizen has been arrested by the FBI at the Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Saturday after months of surveillance by the agency, allegedly planning to engage in terrorism in Syria.
A statement issued by the FBI said there was no connection between this arrest and the recent Boston Marathon bombings.
Abdella Ahmad Tounisi, 18, was being monitored by the agency since his friend was arrested in September after a botched attempt to detonate a bomb outside a Chicago bar.
The suspect had planned to link up with the Jabhat al Nusra group that has links to Al Qaeda in Syria, but the website he was trying to make the connection was set up by the FBI. The reports states that he communicated with an undercover FBI agent for 3 weeks through the website.
A military veteran Erich Harroun was also arrested by authorities for fighting alongside the Nusra Front in Syria, upon returning to the United States at an airport outside Washington on March 27th.
NBC reported the Harroun’s arrest. The article states that the criminal charge of “conspiring to use a destructive device outside of the United States” carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.
