Hamas Segregates Schools by Gender in Gaza

Hamas which has been ruling the Gaza Strip of Palestine since 2007, passed a new law earlier this month to segregate boys and girls in different schools. The series of controversial steps that the Hamas has been taking also include barring male teachers and male staffers from working at girls’ schools. The mandate separates classes for boys and girls from the age of nine, and it will take effect starting this September. Ministry of Education’s legal adviser Walid Mezher told Al Jazeera that the Palestinian education system was “organized before by the Egyptian 1933 education law, which is very outdated….

Israel Introduces ‘Palestinian Only’ Bus Lines

Starting this week, certain buses running from the West Bank into central Israel will have separate lines for Jews and Arabs. This change was due to complaints by Israeli settlers, who use the bus company Afikim to go between settlements in the West Bank and Israel. Haaretz reported that the settlers were concerned about security risks from riding the bus from Tel Aviv back to the West Bank with Palestinians, who often work in Israel and use the buses to go to and from work. After heavy complaints from settlement mayors, Afikim is putting two new bus lines into operation….

Brooklyn College Hosts BDS Panel

On February 7th, Brooklyn College hosted a panel of two speakers in favor of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, the largest non-violent movement against the Israeli occupation. The two speakers, Jewish-American philosopher Judith Butler and leading Palestinian BDS activist Omar Barghouti, were invited to share why they support the movement. The event spurred a week-long storm of controversy and outrage on campus and nationwide. Brooklyn College, located in a former Jewish community in the Midwood neighborhood, is known for its strong Jewish presence, with a fifth of its students identifying as Jewish.
