Read the Declaration of Independence

Independence Hall

An Act of Treason; Not a Law The Declaration of Independence was more a process than a moment in history. This act of treason against an empire sparked the Revolutionary War and, eventually, the United States of America. It is not, and has never been, a law, but it is worth reading. This week, Americans celebrate the Declaration of Independence with picnics, parades, and fireworks. In the movie National Treasure, Nicholas Cage’s character steals the Declaration from the National Archives in order to protect it from the real bad guys. It’s a good movie, but it never really explains what…

Progressive Patriotism

girls-showing-patriotism-at-world-cup_s640x427

A friend of mine was upset the other day, because her best friend accused her of being unpatriotic in the political commentary she posts on Facebook. My friend often writes about problems in America like the growing poverty rate, corporate greed, gun violence, poor access to health care and political corruption. She was told, in essence, that America is the greatest country on Earth with more freedom than any other country and that anyone who complains about America is not a loyal, patriotic American. I have a very different perspective. I think the suggestion that it’s somehow unpatriotic to discuss…

In Philadelphia, Unregulated Capitalism Claims The Lives of 6 More Innocent Victims.

Aerial shot over Market Street in Center City Philadelphia. Rescuers sort through the rubble for survivors.

Last week the weapon of mass destruction known as unregulated capitalism tragically and senselessly claimed more innocent American lives. On Wednesday, June 5th, a demolition crew was working on taking down a building in Philadelphia when suddenly the whole building collapsed, taking out the building next door with it. The adjacent building housed a Salvation Army Thrift Store. This is where most of the victims were innocently going about their days when,  Without warning, the wrath of unregulated capitalism literally came crashing down upon their heads, needlessly ending 6 lives and forever altering 14 others. The contractor, Griffin Campbell Construction Co.,…

When Does Obstruction Become Treason?

politics

Why Won’t Americans Just Read the Constitution? Recently, Bill Maher and Michael Moore rightly criticized Congressional Republicans for their relentless obstruction of government.  Plenty of liberal bloggers and their followers jumped on the bandwagon.  But they all went too far in calling it treason. Republicans have tripped over each other to obstruct every budget proposal, jobs bill, issue, policy, effort, nomination, and idea that President Obama has proposed since the day of his first inauguration. In 2010, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said, at a Heritage Foundation event, that denying President Obama a second term was the GOP’S top…

Congress: Enriching the Rich and Empowering the Powerful

endoftheamericandreamcom-image-43.si

It’s not your imagination. Everything really is increasingly being skewed to benefit the very wealthy at the expense of everyone else. When you look at the principles that many politicians advocate in U.S.A., it becomes explicitly clear that there is an entire system dedicated to giving more wealth and more power to the very tiny fraction of our population who already possess the vast majority of the wealth and power in our country. Here are ten examples of the political ideology advocated by many politicians in our country. Pay close attention and see who really benefits from each of these…

Impeachment: Myths, Facts, and History

obama

More Empty Impeachment Threats from the GOP Right-wingers trembled with glee when Sen. James Inhofe said that President Obama might be impeached for the events in Benghazi.  Few rank-and-file Americans understand impeachment or the odds of it happening.  It does not mean that the president is fired. Most members of Congress and the media understand what impeachment means, but our schools work very hard to produce politically ignorant citizens.  Impeachment means charging a public official with an offense.  Impeachment does not mean firing a public official from her/his job. Constitution and Procedures The U.S. Constitution states that: The House of…

Ten Reasons Why You Should not Support the NRA

120905055240-money-bills-story-top

1. The NRA is a terrorist’s best friend.   Technology is making it increasingly possible to manufacture handguns made primarily of plastic and other non-metal materials which cannot be discovered by metal detectors. This gun would be a terrorist’s dream but a nightmare for airport security. In the 1980s Ronald Reagan’s Attorney General proposed a ban on the manufacture of plastic guns, but the NRA opposed this legislation and it was withdrawn.  Over the years, similar attempts to prohibit the manufacture of plastic guns have been killed by the NRA. Of course, no law-abiding person needs a handgun that can evade…

Are the Suburbs Undergoing a Metamorphosis?

090312-abandoned-shopping-center

The Global Economic Crash of 2008 was a watershed which is continuing to have effects in all aspects of the economy, politics and society. However, it was merely an exclamation mark within the developing trends in the U.S. that are pertinent to suburbanization in the country, such as: -The national economy will not bounce back to pre-2008 in the foreseeable future with continued slow growth -Demographics have changed (Baby Boomers retiring, smaller family sizes, more single adults, more ethnic diversity etc.) -The smaller labor force in manufacturing requiring unskilled labor -A decline in the middle class’s purchasing power due to…

Could 3-D Printing Change the Society and the City?

Objet1000_Cart_RacingCar-h-res-1

3-D printing combined with its increasing affordability could be an important element in accelerating the world away from the Post-Industrial to the Information Age.  3-D printing is the process of producing a physical object from a digital blue print or a scanned object. It is an additive process, not a subtractive process, as used in the machine tooling for a metal or plastic object. It relies on a mold that is inserted with a material (plastic, iron, copper etc.) to make a finished product. Using a digital schematic, the 3-D printer builds a series of layers using material such as:…

Do Some U.S. Senators Support Genocide?

lotsoguns1

A first ever comprehensive international Arms Trade Treaty was approved by UN on April 3rd, 2013. The treaty seeks to regulate the $70 billion (46.2 billion pounds) business in conventional arms and keep weapons out of the hands of human rights abusers. If the treaty is signed by President Obama, government agencies would review it before the administration decides whether to seek ratification by the Senate. The Arms Trade Treaty is intended to prevent brutal dictators from acquiring conventional weapons including tanks, missiles, warships, artillery, and combat aircraft which they can use on their own people to commit genocide. Passage…

What Does the Future Hold for Syria?

syria-conflict-559x420

The civil war in Syria continues to drag on tragically, nearing its third year. With thousands of lives lost and at least one million refugees fleeing to neighboring countries, Syria is no longer a viable country. There are common electricity outages, food shortages, half of the buildings destroyed, including many hospitals, massive dislocation of its population-internally and externally, and a civilian death toll of over 70,000, which continues to increase. One of the hardest hit cities has been Aleppo, the largest in Syria. Being a major battleground for both sides since the outset of the war, it continues to struggle…

Momentum Building for Paid Sick Leave Laws in U.S. Cities.

2007-02-22-ABC-WNCG-sick1

The United States of America is the only industrialized nation in the world that does not guarantee any paid sick leave to its workers. Worldwide, over 145 countries guarantee all workers paid time off for illnesses. In the absence of any federal policy on mandated sick leave in the near future, American cities like Portland, Seattle, Washington D.C., and San Francisco have taken action requiring all workers have access to paid time off for sicknesses. The pressure is growing on more cities, and even some states to look at enacting similar legislation. New York and Philadelphia could be close to…

The Postal Service Is Not a GOP Target

205_npadvhover

Congressional Republicans Just Want You to Think It Is. Unlike most Americans, many members of Congress have actually read the United States Constitution. They know what it would take to abolish the postal service and they do not intend to do it.

Downtown Green: The “Islands of Sustainability”

highlinerendering

Sustainability is an overwhelming amorphous goal on a global, national, or regional scale. However, when it is broken-down to small areas and focused projects, it becomes real and tangible. Instead of grand plans, little ones can be made which may have a fractal or ripple effect on the region in which the project is located. This above statement is the essence of an  “island of sustainability” (Walner et al.). Specifically, the term refers to the redevelopment, usually through a public/private partnership, of a designated derelict area into one that enhances the physical environment. It could be the redesign of an…

The Tree of Liberty and The Roots of All Evil

Money-in-politics-photo-via-Shuttershock

And liberty and justice…for those who can afford it… Corruption. It’s one of the few issues that everyone, on every “side” simply detests. Regardless of the spin put on it or the arguments and justifications for its practice, most will agree there is simply no excuse for it. And while generally bandied like a partisan beach ball, with each side trying desperately to condemn the other for their influences and complicity, while bending over backwards to justify their own, so much is lost in the process. Despite this endless noise and outrage, the roots of corruption, the very mechanics of…

Rand Paul Ends Confirmation Filibuster, White House Responds

rand-paul-speaking-gage-skidmore-620x413

Progressive writers and commentators are tripping over themselves today throughout the blogosphere and social media universe, as they try to reconcile their feelings regarding Republican Senator Rand Paul and his nearly record setting filibuster on the Senate floor, in which he sought to block the confirmation of Paul Brennan to the position CIA Director. Citing what he described as grave concerns over the Obama Administration’s unmanned drone program, which has created numerous political firestorms in recent weeks, Paul stated that he planned to speak as long as he could to draw attention to something he found “very disturbing.” “I will…

Sequester On Sanity

www.nytimes.com

“Perhaps no words more accurately and succinctly illustrate the confusion about economics than “Monetary Sovereignty.” It is not a theory or a hypothesis or a philosophy. In its essence, it merely is a description of the way federal financing actually works.”  ~Rodger Malcolm Mitchell Back in 2011, the idea of “sequestration,” or the implementing of harsh spending cuts that would automatically go into effect on March 1st, was floated in an effort to force the two political parties to get together and make a deal to work towards decreasing government debt. A telling sign for many of the increasingly broken…

An Open Letter to all People who Hate the President

obama

(Note: The views expressed in this editorial and the video below are those of the individual and not necessarily those of The Progressive Press, its editorial staff or its affiliates.) It’s fine to be a conservative who disagrees with Obama politically. He is a fallible human being. Like any politician, he deserves criticism now and then. Progressives criticize him all the time because his policies are more conservative than many thought he would be. If you would say “Obama is wrong on this issue and here’s why”, I could respect that. But it’s something else to be a hard-core Glenn…

Standardized Testing: More Harm Than Good

Those-who-can-teach-from-teabonics-e1362505354898

Early in 2013, Seattle high school teachers boycotted their annual standardized test. This brave and necessary move has reignited public debate about the place of standardized testing. School reform has gone back and forth for over a century and a half, between the 19th century, Prussian military-industrial model to Dewey’s individualized, “special snowflake” philosophy and back again to factory- and business-preparedness treatment of children. Because neoliberalism is the winning philosophy at the moment, the worth of schools is tied to how well they can churn out identical cogs to plug in to the economic machine. Schools around the country have…

‘Grand Jury Resistors’ Released, Questions Remain

Image from greycoast.wordpress.com

Tuesday, The Progressive Press reported on a story out of Washington state involving three “anarchist” activists, who had been detained in a federal detention center without criminal charge since September (and December respectively,) for refusing to identify and testify against area activists and their political ties. We can now report that the two of them, Matthew Duran and Katherine Olejnik, have been released today from federal custody without charge. As reported Tuesday, Duran and Olejnik had been held in solitary confinement in the SeaTac Federal Detention Center’s Special Housing Unit (SHU) since December, as part of an effort by federal…
