CLUSTERDUCK

Here’s the gist: with the Phil “Duck Dynasty” Robertson controversy over homophobic and racist comments in a recent interview with GQ Magazine, it is private “hate speech”, not public “free speech” that we are dealing with; there is a monumental difference. How is it that the First Amendment is so universally misunderstood? I’ve read it all over the last day: “Phil is just speaking his mind!” “Phil can say whatever he damn well wants because of the First Amendment!” “Phil’s being punished for agreeing with the Bible!” (my personal favorite); “Just because Phil slammed a special interest group…..SMH!” “This is not…

45th Anniversary of King’s Assassination

Imagine being told where you could sit in a bus, whether you could eat in a restaurant or which water fountain you could use to quench your thirst. This was the life of the African-American for the first half of the 20th century in states throughout the South. The segregation was commonplace, and some of the things that were done to maintain separation of the races were contemptible. Hotels could ban African-Americans, and restaurants could prevent blacks from entering through the front door. Instead, African-Americans would get their food in the back, right from the kitchen. The public water fountains…

Immigrants Are Coming!: Is Nativism Driving The Immigration Debate?

Written by guest author  Axel Caballero Agreed, the window of opportunity is wide open for the passage of substantial immigration reform. Immigration reform is, after all, the next big ticket item. It’s the coveted prize that allegedly holds the key to millions of Latinos nationwide who will soon fall in line with whatever the powers that be decide to pass as “immigration reform”. No matter what it is, just slap the word “reform” to it and you will keep the community happy. After all, would anyone in their right mind would want to anger the same community that just proved…

Israel Introduces ‘Palestinian Only’ Bus Lines

Starting this week, certain buses running from the West Bank into central Israel will have separate lines for Jews and Arabs. This change was due to complaints by Israeli settlers, who use the bus company Afikim to go between settlements in the West Bank and Israel. Haaretz reported that the settlers were concerned about security risks from riding the bus from Tel Aviv back to the West Bank with Palestinians, who often work in Israel and use the buses to go to and from work. After heavy complaints from settlement mayors, Afikim is putting two new bus lines into operation….

How We Shape Technology…Or Does Technology Shape Us?

Human Rights activists are able to use Google Earth’s free satellite imagery to identify new North Korean prison camps. Further using technology for good, DigitalGlobe Inc is the source of some of Google Earth’s satellite images. DigitalGlobe also provides imagery and analysis pro bono to humanitarian organizations as well as The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea. Google Earth Engine technology monitors Amazon deforestation and other tropical countries, helping the Surui tribe map and preserve their culture and forest, and provides other environmental and human rights outreach. Around the world social media has an impact in uprisings and revolutions. Especially in restricted countries with repressive regimes social media…
